Meta Implements Policy Requiring Disclosure of Misleading AI-Generated Content in Political Ads

Meta to Require Disclosure of Misleading AI-Generated Content in Political Ads

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, announced on Wednesday that it will enforce a new policy requiring advertisers to disclose when their political, electoral, or social issue ads contain potentially misleading AI-generated or altered content. This move comes as Meta seeks to address concerns about the spread of false information and deceptive campaign tactics on its platforms.

The Scope of the New Policy

The new rule will apply specifically to advertisements on Facebook and Instagram that feature “realistic” images, videos, or audio that falsely depict individuals participating in actions they have never done, or events that have unfolded differently from reality. Additionally, any content that depicts fake people or fictional events but appears realistic will also require disclosure.

The policy is set to be implemented in the coming year and will require advertisers to explicitly disclose if any image, video, or audio in their ads has been created or altered using AI technology. This means that viewers will have more transparency regarding the authenticity and origin of the content they encounter on Meta’s platforms.
