How to Turn Your PC Into a Miracast Receiver

Any PC can now operate as a wireless receiver for Miracast, allowing you to view the display from another Windows PC, an Android smartphone or tablet, or a Windows phone, thanks to the Update for Windows 11.

When you start the app, you’ll notice a message saying that your PC is now ready to connect wirelessly. That is all there is to it. There’s no need to fiddle with the firewall or network server configurations. To cast, simply open the app whenever you want.

The notification “This device may have problems showing your material since its hardware wasn’t specifically intended for wireless projection” will most likely appear on most PCs. The application will still work, but it will probably work better if the PC’s hardware and drivers were intended expressly for wireless projection.

You’ll see a couple additional options after it connects. Allow input from a keyboard or mouse connected to this display by enabling “Allow input from a keyboard or mouse linked to this display,” and the PC acting as the receiver will be able to interact with the PC via the Connect app.

Select “Alter projection mode” to change the project mode. It operates in “duplicate” mode by default, which replicates the contents of your screen. Alternatively, you can extend the screen and use the remote display as a second monitor, or you can just use the second screen.

Regardless of which choice you select, full-screen mode can be enabled by selecting the “full screen” button on the window title bar.

How to Cast From an Android Device

You can utilize the built-in Cast capability on an Android handset to connect…as long as your phone supports it. Things aren’t always straight forward on Android. Your phone or tablet’s manufacturer may or may not include Miracast support. In fact, Miracast capability has been deleted from Google’s latest Nexus smartphones. If your device supports Miracast, though, this should work.

On Android, go to Settings > Display > Cast to cast. Toggle the “Enable wireless display” checkbox on the menu button. If you have the Connect app open, your PC should appear in this list. When you tap the PC in the display, it will begin projecting right away.

Don’t see the option here? Your phone or tablet’s manufacturer may have put it in a different place. Look up how to use Miracast on your specific device for more information.

For security concerns, the Settings app is deemed “restricted content,” so you’ll have to exit it before your Android device’s screen appears in the Connect app. Until then, the Connect app will only show a black screen.

You’ll discover notifications in the action center if you use the Connect app. When we connected an Android device, for example, we received a notice stating that protected material could not be displayed and that we could not manage the Android device’s screen with the mouse on our PC.

To stop projecting, just close the Connect window on the PC receiving the remote display or end the remote display connection on the device projecting to it.
